it can be hazardous to drive in Iceland
Conditions for driving in Iceland in wintertime can be very difficult especially for drivers not used to them. Not all of the 13.000 km that the Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration controls get serviced at winter. A bit over 5.000 km get winter service. A large portion of the road system is also closed, impassable. Drivers need to take extra care on snowy and slippery roads. Also they should take extra care when driving where one lane bridges appear. And that can happen suddenly. Always drive according to the situation.
Before going anywhere check our website, the map with road conditions and weather information. If in doubt call 1777 in winter it is open from 06:30 - 22:00 or from 6.30 AM till 10 PM. Take care and be prepared, here is information about our winter service. When hiring a rental car take care that it is equipped for winter driving. Studded tires out side of Reykjavík is preferable and most Icelanders would not drive outside the Reykjavík area without them. Every rental car should have a placard on the steering wheel with information about driving in Iceland, please ask for it if it missing. Here is a picture of it.
