Driving safely in Iceland
In some way, it is different driving in Iceland than most other countries. Driving off an asphalt road on to a gravel road can be hazardous if the driver is not aware of the change and slows down. The weather can change very rapidly and driving conditions therefore too.

Remember that inexperienced drivers can easily lose control of the car on unpaved roads, the maximum speed is 80 km/h but often that speed is too high. The roads are narrow and it's easy to lose control of the car. Even if the speed limit is 80 or 90 km/h, the road may not safely allow such speeds.
If you are not driving a 4x4 jeep, you are not allowed to drive on mountain roads (as identified on maps). According to Icelandic law everyone must wear a seatbelt regardless of where seated in the car and children must use safety equipment appropriate to their weight. Headlights are required around the clock, while driving. Driving off-road is forbidden!
